Ridley Creek State Park Ride Day

Jun 22, 2016 1:39:54 PM

No matter what day of the week it is, any day and everyday can be a healthy day. Just a small dose of exercise can get your blood flowing in order to increase oxygen. Practicing healthy lifestyles through organic eating plus enjoying the outdoors will surely lift your mood and self-esteem. We've heard the stories about those who just love their steaks and burgers on the grill, no problem; try switching to grass fed beef. You may even try substituting ground turkey while still enjoying your favorite toppings and condiments. It's all about getting your body used to a healthier alternative. Whatever it takes, whether you jog, hike, swim or bike, just be sure you get fresh air and absorb all the nature around you. Lower stress levels by hearing birds sing, seeing leaves sway from the treetops and feel the summer heat as you sweat out toxins. Ridley Creek Park Ride Day

All of those who joined us on our 1st group ride at Ridley Creek State Park experienced all the benefits for that “feel good aahhh" sensation. It was unbelievable that our participants ranged in age from 3years old to 65. Some cyclists were experts with years of experience, some cam just for fun, some were first time beginners, some came to kick off Father's Day and one was 5months pregnant! It was good to see so many show up, in all walks of life. The best part was that we all finished, 2 hours of serious cycling. For those of you who are wondering how our 3 year old did it? Well, he was in a bike seat as a passenger as his Dad did all the pedaling. At the end of 2 hours our little friend fell fast asleep.

The cardio workout was rocking within us and our bodies were thankful. The day was perfect with lots of sunshine, warm temps, slight breeze and since it was Father's Day, not at all crowded.

Fresh organic fruits, snacks and cold water awaited us after the ride. We were tired but our spirits were not. We all conquered the great hill at Ridley Creek State Park and as we parted wishing all a happy Father's Day. We all agreed the meal that would await us later that day would be well deserved. Enjoy the great outdoors.

Benefit from natural therapies And, find yourself biking!!

In late October one of our valued customers approached us to commission a handcrafted coffee table along with two matching bed night stands. They already had the wood that they wanted us to shape and they began to tell us a story regarding the nature of the wood and the sentimental value behind it. The first thing the customer had said was that he has some live edge pine planks. At first this was not the most exciting news to my ears, however, the rest of the story made me want to take the project on in full force. Long story short, the wood planks were from our customer, John’s  father-in-law’s property. John had seen these planks on his property for some time and he knew 30 years ago that he wanted to create something with them.
By not having the technical know-how or the time to learn some woodworking skills and the time that it takes to create a project from start to finish the wood sat year after year, that is until he found Earth Wood & Fiber.

John and his wife dropped off about five planks of wood, some live edge; they gave us a simple set of rules. They told us that they would supply the bases for the bed night stands and wanted us to construct the top, they wanted a coffee table to a specific dimension and they wanted a bottom shelf, no sharp corners, and natural figure with as much live edge as possible, a dark walnut stain and the most important rule was to be finished by Christmas Eve, so that his father-in-law could literally be mind-blown! With those set of rules in mind we took on the project!Rough Pine Planks

We got to work right away, we started by first planning each board; this was not an easy task. However, our power planer and our Lie-Nielsen Planes got the job done for us and painless as possible.  Each plank was wildly out of plane and the boards ha

The Glue Up

d a tremendous amount of twist and if this wasn’t enough, the boards contained a large amount of sap that made planning and surfacing more difficult than was expected. After planning was finished we worked on the glue up process so that we could get our table tops to the correct dimensions. The next step was to add some natural curves to the piece in order to detract from the super boxy look and to give it a more natural flowing body. This is when the tables really started to come alive! Next was to get to the finishing, this step is the most time consuming and lots of sanding! We started by getting a few different types of files to clean up the edges of the table so that we could create a smooth finish without any sharp angles, next it was to bring out our favorite tool; the orbital sander! We began this process by attaching a 60 grit sandpaper and sanded all the way up to 220 grit until we were able to obtain a glass smooth finish. The Bed Night Stand The table was coming along amazingly, it was just a little too pine looking haha, we fixed that right up!! We started rubbing in a walnut stain that looked absolutely awesome once it was finished drying . The next day we started to apply several coats of shellac, we really love shellac. Shellac is a naturally occurring resin made from the Lac Bug. Sheelac is a great product as it is food safe and natural and it produces a hard finish that really helps to seal the wood from sap. We gave the shellac about 24 hours to dry and cure. Over the next week we worked on applying a polyurethane top coat that produces a matte finish and creates a hard surface to protect the wood.

Finally, we start to attach the beautiful live edge planks of wood to their respective bases. Our customers supplied the bed night stand bases for us, which were upcycled from another piece of furniture. The only thing we had to do to these bases were to apply a few coats of hammered style paint. As for the coffee table we got our coffee table legs from ECON Welding & Fabrication in Lakemoor, Illinois. They do a great job and do plenty of custom work and the best part is that they are homegrown, hard-working Americans! Anyhow, the table turned out great and our customers were
The Finished Coffee Tableextremely happy. The look on their faces when they took their first look makes all of this worth it, it was awesome! Let us know your thoughts on this project and we look forward to our next one! As always thanks for reading and cheers to 2016!

Giving Thanks For The Holidays

Dec 10, 2015 5:27:56 PM

Its 62 degrees outside, the sun shining and my lawn surprising could use 1 last trimming. I think I said that about 2 months ago. Well here we are a little more than 2 weeks before Christmas. If the radio didn't remind me that songs ofthe holidays are playing, I would still think its the end of summer!

My message to anyone who will hear me - especially this time of year isthis: Be Kind, Be Thankful and share some Happiness! There are terrible issues plaguing our world today. As one individucal, there is only so much we can do to make a difference. Here is my wish list for "Santa".

1. When you see a Fed Ex or UPS truck, give them the right of way. It is so hard on them this time of year. Besdies the volume of packages, they don't finish their day til their truck is emtpy. They work long, hard hours to deliver many of the gifts you have ordered. Give them this little coutesy.

2. Almost all of us use the pharmacist for advice and to fill our prescriptions. Little do we realize how hard they actually work. Again, use patience waiting in line, smile to let them know- no pressure, and when you pull up to the drive through line in your car, do not ask them to grab a soda or bottle of multi-vitamins to add to your prescription order. Pharmacists are one of the busiest people. Tell them thank you and how much you appreciate their service.

3. Holidays are for the innocent creatures we call children. They grow up too fast. Keep 'em young and playing as long as possible. When you see a business with a Toys For Tots box, please try to visit a local Rite-Aid or CVS and for $5 pick up a toy forthose children not as fortunate as ours. Betteryet, get your children involved in this important learning lesson. Give your child or children $5-$10 and have them pick out a toy; Of course keeping with in budget. They will love the activity, feel good doing a decent deed, and if they drop off a toy at EWF, we will offer a 10% discount on any 1 item. Every toy equates to a 10% discount.

Lastly we want to wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday season. Many thanks for all our customers who have helped us grow in supporting Made in the USA. Our survival depends on each and every one of you. Its a tough business arena today and as another year comes to an end, we look around and say how fortunate we are to have peace and family. We wish everyone a great Holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

Cheers!!

Key Ingredients For Fall

Oct 14, 2015 3:44:11 PM

Eucalyptus & Spearmint EWF CandleGarlic/Oil DishHow many times do we hear, "Summer just goes by in a flash." And, already we are here in the sweetness of Autumn. Like a fine wine, fall gets better as we set our mood and savor the brilliance around us. Crisp apples, pumpkins, fall foliage and the warmth of a crackling fireplace. There is no better place to enjoy this warm welcome than the comfort of your home.

The best conversations occur in the kitchen. Serve up a freshly toasted sliced baguette, add a grated garlic clove, parmesan cheese, add olive oil and any spices (just oregano will do). Savor all those flavors as friends and family gather around to chat. Memories are made. So simple. Thats the beauty. We carry a garlic/olive oil dish to facilitate this tasty appetizer, its easy and so affordable.

Green Lotus Wood Wildflowers

Dress your table or counter with wood wildflowers. These flowers incorporate hand curled petals and each hand-painted to see the wood beneath will add charm while they never need watering, they will never wilt or cause allergies. Arranged blossoms to hang on a wall or set them on center stage on your dining room table. The bright spot in any room!

The essence of Autumn with chilly temperatures, reflect the impending winter upon us. Set the mood with scented soy wax candles. They will waff through the air hinting of pumpkin spice or eucalyptus evergreens. Made o nthe premises of Earth Wood & Fiber, it's a great way to get your "Glow On". Simple key ingredients in today's busy schedules. The perfect balance of flair, fun and fabulous, it's absolutely golden!
